Report from the Treasurer
I believe that I have caught up with all "bills" and reimbursments for our chapter and we are sitting at an estimated $4,500 in the account. I have yet to balance it out since the last three checks went out. So that figure is an estimate but only off by a few dollars and pennies.
The EIN application has been submitted under my name for our chapter. I hope to hear back in the next 6 weeks about that.
If you have a bill that needs to be paid please let me know, or if you have not received payment for something.
In closing, I wish you all a blessed new year. I pray this new year brings us success as a chapter and as fellow friends!
I will do my best to respond to emails in a timely manner but apologize in advance if that does not happen!

Report from our PDK Foundation Representative
Foundation Representative Update,
This year has been very slow in regard to our fund raising. I plan to attend the Atlanta residency for Walden University and will be raffling off a basket of healthy environmentally friendly products as well as recruiting new members for our organization. I have recently completed a grant with the assistance of my fellow WaldenPDK colleagues to aid in the enhancement and maintenance of our online peer review journal. That will be all for now I wish everyone a blessed and joyous 2008.

Report from the Webmaster
Hello all,
I have made some long-needed changes to the discussion board styles, trying different looks for both the party page and this business page. Let me know what you think. Also, I've added an automatic datestamp on each post. This might be improved by adding the time as well, but that's complicated by the different timezones we post from, and... I wonder, is it really necessary? Will it help? As it is, the date that appears with your post is the time in the EST timezone when you click submit.
Another improvement in the discussion boards is that you can now separate longish posts into paragraphs simply by leaving a blank line between them. Previously, separating paragraphs was cumbersone, requiring you (or I) to put HTML tags in your post. I hope this improves readability and avoids frustration when posting.
One more change that is not so obvious... if you find the font size too large or small for your preference, it is NOT "hard coded" to this size; it can be adjusted, depending on your browser software. Look for a font size menu command, or try a keyboard shortcut (often the control or command key with the plus or minus key).
And finally, officers, please note that where I have put in email links so that folks can easily contact you, I have not used your actual email address anywhere on the page, or within the code for the page. It is in an encrypted form, which impedes email address harvesting software, as a way to minimize spam through the site. The drawback is that this method may be troublesome to use from a public computer, because the machine won't be set up with the user's personal email program login information, which is required to send an email. However, to copy the address to the clipboard for use in a web-based email program on a public computer, you can right-click the address (control-click on Mac) and choose "copy"; then paste into your message.

Report from the VP of Membership Dear Colleagues, I am posting my report in the discussion with the intent of hoping to have it replied to. By having a discussion we can meet our Chapter President's call to learning how to engage our members. I recieve each month anywhere from 3 to 5 requests for information to join our chapter. The best way to convert these requests into members is not to send out repeated reminders to join but to focus on our reputation for creating a difference in the educational community. In order to get people engaged we need clearly defined roles, positions, events, committees where people can join for short or long term assignments. People do not know what to do and not wanting to become involved at the board level leaves a gap of what to do. As VP of Membership I believe we need to define what people can do: fundraising, membership promotion, committee work, advocacy, and so on that the membership and the board can work together to define. Let me give a conrete example. We are building up our Simon Scholarship, we can recruit a volunteer to create a letter, call, and follow-up in order to answer questions and to see that we reach our goal. Another example is to look to see our programs and decide how to support them. We have dedicated members doing excellent work in education and there is a need for volunteers to support their work as it is the work of Walden University CyberSpace Chapter's mission. The best way for a reputation to be known is a Public Relations campaign. A team of volunteers among our members can work together to get news of our work into as many different university and school district newsletters as possible. There are many more tasks that will engage our members and many excellent ideas some of you have that are keeping silent. I urge you to speak up and out. Finally our peer review journal is a wonderful way to get engaged. I look forward to hearing from you to get your ideas and comments. David, you have such great ideas! Thanks for pointing out that what-can-I-DO? gap between simply being a member, and taking on an officer role. YES, we need to structure "bitesize" ways for members to participate. Our newsletter effort has been a one-person task heretofore, but could surely be better if we have a team of contributors. Ditto for the website. Hmmm, what if we have a "task board" on the website (or in the newsletter?) where officers can post specific tasks they would appreciate some help with, and members can browse for tasks that suit their interests and abilities? |

Hello Betty, I am in the doctoral program at Walden University in the school of Public Policy and Administration. I think you will find the University, the professors, the academic standards, your fellow students and all associated with Walden University living up to the best of the best of getting a degree at any University. A online university as it is true with a online chapter in this case PDK comes with anticipation of how to develop meaningful relationships as well as getting something of value. Here is what I have learned from running a NGO online, being a member of Walden PDK online and Walden University that one of the technology used for communication is the internet. You will be also using the phone and will meet people as I have at Walden University at residencies. You also develop profound and meaningful friendships. The reason is that you have to work harder to communicate so you take the time and care to communicate more fully. Hence people get to know you faster and better. You even develop ways of meeting in person. The fact is that it is mislabeled to call it cyberspace or online as that is only one and a large part of the communication but not the only one of interacting. For a lack of the best word and I am thinking of one it is really a interactive program at Walden U you have started and will if you join with our Chapter at PDK. I have at your request e-mailed you information concerning membership. Please use this space to ask questions and to explore getting to know other members. David Kenneth Waldman VP of Membership |

I agree that it would be wonderful to have some people who would do some calling to others, as well as the other helpful areas mentioned! The scholarship letter has been written and is awaiting the officers' approval before the calling could start. There could even be several teams calling,as the membership is large. Another way to help is to become an intern to a specific office. This is the year that an 'elect', or intern, can be chosen for the offices that may be vacated. That means you have a full year to learn the position and have the presiding officer teach you how to run an office, and the duties involved. Then when you step in as an officer, you will be fully knowledgeable and will feel comfortable taking over. Do consider it! Gay really could use help with the webmaster job. If anyone is willing and able, she is an excellent teacher and would give any help needed. I think it would be great if a chat room could be started so people could write in just to talk or ask for help or information which others could pass on. A Public Relations Team is an outstanding idea to help the growth of our chapter. Which reminds me, in the January issue of the Connection magazine, Dr. Billie Spellman has written an article called "One Size Doesn't Fit All". In the last paragraph, she talks about the success of our cyberspace chapter! Don't miss it! | |

Hello Kappans, This is an opportunity I came across on the Government Grants website and thought you may be interested. Department of Commerce DOC Postsecondary Internship Program Grant http://www.grants.gov/search/search.do?&mode=VIEW&flag2006=true&oppId=16680 The Department of Commerce (DOC) established a postsecondary internship program to aid and promote experiential training activities which foster future employment opportunities within DOC and the Federal Government in general. United States citizens enrolled as students in post-secondary accredited educational institutions, i.e., community college, undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate, and professional institutions will participate in onsite work experiences in DOC bureaus and offices in order to: integrate academic theory and workplace requirements, gain relevant skills and knowledge, explore federal career options, develop professional networks, and develop a greater awareness of the role of federal agencies. The program will be administered through a partnership between DOC and nonprofit and/or educational institution(s) of higher education and funded by cooperative agreement(s). The DOC will serve as host for the student interns and provide program support through the financial assistance award. There will be no employer-employee relationship between DOC and its hosted interns. The nonprofit and/or educational institution will be the supervisor of record for the intern and shall control the means and manner of the interns' activities. This notice solicits proposals from eligible institutions that desire to collaborate with the DOC on this initiative. ~ barb |

Thanks for posting this info Barb. Also, this "seconds" in a way an idea Jarek Janio has suggested for our website--that we have a moderated blog where any members can post items like this (news, announcements, links...) at any time, not just during meeting periods. I'll set that up before the Spring meeting. (And, if you don't mind, once I get it up, I'll copy this announcment there to start things off ;) |

Hello Fellow Kappans, The time has come to adjourn the Winter Mtg. I appreciate all the comments from the membership regarding how we can improve our already fantastic chapter. I agree that a moderated blog is a wonderful idea! Consistent dialogue can only lead to good things. I will be posting the old/new business just prior to the Spring meeting. In addition, look out for more infoprmation regarding the blog, internal and external scholarships, the newsletter, and much much more. Thank you all for your support and membership. ~ barb |
