Welcome!

... to the May 2003 Walden Cyberspace PDK meeting. I hope this email finds everyone invigorated with springtime energy.

Here is a summary of the items on our agenda for this meeting:

  1. Soliciting applications, and then selecting a recipient for our Literacy Project book donations
  2. Initiating the radon awareness research project among our members
  3. Firming up plans for our "face to face" gathering during Walden summer session
  4. Reviewing our 2003-04 budget proposal adjustments
  5. Initiating the new members who have joined since May 2001 (those not attending summer session)
  6. Installing the officers we elected for the July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2004 term

I must apologize--I haven't completed updating the website pages in preparation for this meeting, so as I continue to work on that, we'll first handle the business that we can do best via email. As I prepare the files, I'll activate links in the column at left, and also notify the membership email list. I have extended the closing date of this meeting until Saturday the 24th to give myself the time I will need to get all the web work done, and for all of you to then view, discuss, and respond to the material I'll be posting to the website the weekend of May 17-18.

First item of business: The Literacy Project

During our last meeting, we agreed to reactivate the Literacy Project, in which our chapter will choose a school library that is in need of an influx of books. Once a school is selected, members will be asked to individually purchase and send book donations from a "wish list" that the selected school's librarian will create. At the end of a specified time period, the chapter will make an additional matching donation of new books (up to a total of $300).

Do YOU know of a school library that is in need of financial help to acquire needed books?

Please nominate your choice of a school library!

Between now and Monday the 19th, consult with the school's librarian to get this information for our school nomination web form:

  • Name of school and district
  • Name and phone or email address of the librarion or contact person for the library
  • Number of students served by the library
  • Brief description of the socio-economic nature of the school community
  • Brief description of the general type(s) of books most needed
  • Any other pertinent info about this library's need for our support

By midnight (PST) Monday the 19th, enter the above information into the school nomination web page. From your nominations, I will prepare a ballot and we will vote to choose a recipient school before the close of this meeting.

Next item of business...

Will you participate in the Radon Research Project?

Review the proposal here. The chapter will purchase 10 kits and send them to the first 10 chapter members who request them. To have an opportunity to participate, send your name and postal mailing address directly to Andre Elliot, our Research Representative (aelliott@Waldenu.edu) between now and midnight Friday (EST). This weekend Andre can update us all on the number of kits requested, and where they will be going.

Summer Session at Walden~
a chance to meet your PDK chapter colleagues "in the flesh"!

Any of you who will be attending summer session this year, please share (via the mailing list) the dates you will be in Bloomington, so that we can set a date and time for this gathering that will work for the most people. We will be trying to arrange a tour of the PDK International office (which is conveniently located near the Indiana University campus in Bloomington), and we also hope to arrange for the executive director of PDK, George Kersey, to conduct an initiation ceremony for all new chapter members who are in attendance.

That's it for now!
