ANNOUNCEMENTS
Our Fall meeting will be held using
website and email, opening Sunday, September 21st, and continuing through
Sunday the 28th. Please note the dates on your calendar, and visit the
website or watch for an email opening the meeting on September 21st.
NEWS
- Our chapter held its last
chapter meeting in May 2003. Several items of business were conducted
including a review of our budget, initiation of new members, as well
as other items such as plans for representing the chapter at the Walden
summer session and commencement.
- Chapter representatives met
with prospective new members at Walden summer session, and a picture
was taken of chapter members who attended. See the photo on the website!
- Our Literacy Project will
support the Indiana Avenue School library this year. Congratulations
to Indiana Avenue School (soon to become New York Avenue School after
they move this fall) and to Jennifer Pullman, one of our newer members,
who nominated the school. During our September meeting we'll learn
how successful the program has been. It is not too late to make donations!
- On June 25, 2003, Treasurer
Arthur Ogden submitted the "year end" financial report to
the chapter officers. It will be presented to the entire membership
for review and an approval vote during the September meeting.
- The following is a summary
of PDK activities during the recent summer session in Bloomington,
submitted by Andre Elliott:
"Here
is a report on my experience as the representative of Walden University
Cyberspace Phi Delta Kappa during Walden University's 2003 summer session.
First, an acknowledgement. Our venerable advisor, Dr. Marilyn K. Simon,
opened the doors to enter the summer session by introducing me to Dr.
Iris Yob. Dr. Yob met with me to determine opportune times to speak
to Walden students. Dr. Yob introduced me to Dr. Carolyn Calloway-Thomas
and Dr. Kurt W. Schoch, two Walden faculty members who had conveniently
scheduled sessions. Both instructors were eager for me to introduce
our unique chapter to Walden's students. On Thursday, July 10 and Tuesday
July 15, I spoke to approximately 100 students. The engagement with
students was enhanced when Dr. George Kersey, Jr., our executive director,
was introduced on Tuesday, July 15. The most important statement made
by Dr. Kersey: "PDK International publishes the most cited journal
in education, the Phi Delta Kappan." All students were given pamphlets
and information regarding membership. We announced an opportunity to
participate in a new members ceremony during the summer session.
Dr. Simon is commended
for meeting students twice on the mornings selected for taking photos
of PDK members. After photos, we walked to PDK headquarters. During
our second walk on Friday July 18, a new members ceremony occurred.
Dr. Kersey and I were the key facilitators of the new members ceremony.
This week, I was excited to read Dr. Sandi Gardner's report on the
number of applications she is presently processing. Moreover, I am
hopeful that the effort generated by Dr. Simon and myself yields at
least 50 new members before the end of August 2003. Approximately 15
new members joined during the summer session PDK promotion. Dr. Gardner
can provide a new members report regarding our increase during this
summer session period.
The best news
of all is the cost incurred during the summer session. Walden PDK allocated
approximately 600 to 800 dollars for my expenses. I am delighted to
announce that all of this money shall remain in our budget. There is
no cost to our chapter. I have ideas to share with all on how to possibly
achieve more members next summer. The summer session is our greatest
opportunity for visibility and growth.
I recommend a
letter of commendation for Dr. Iris Yob. She was the key to easy access
to everything that made my experience enjoyable and fruitful. As for
Dr. Marilyn K. Simon, well, that's another story."
We certainly do appreciate Dr. Simon's
providing pictures of those attending the summer session, it is great to
see faces and get to know one another. Congratulations to those who joined
our chapter and attended the initiation ceremonies at PDK headquarters!
And a special thanks to Andre Elliott.
